Boat Design

Today we had to design the boat that Isabelle and her family might escape on. I decided since we already had a little boat, to build a roof made of materials around the house. My mum helped me sketch the design on paper. I would add four bamboo poles to hold a roof such as corrugated iron to shelter the family and shower curtains to block the rain and stay dry. I would get these materials from my bathroom (Shower curtain) and the roofing on our sleep out (corrugated iron).

Materials:
Corrugated Iron - For the roofing to shelter the members on board the boat.
Bamboo Poles - To hold the corrugated iron (I would cut the bamboo to the appropriate size).
Shower Curtains - In case rain comes inside the boat, they will be able to shelter themselves with the shower curtains.

Extras:

Other extras I would add would be a fishing rod to catch food along the way and I would bring some land food as well such as meat and snacks like chips and pasta. I would also bring a gas cooker to cook the fish and extra food.

Entertainment:I would pack on board a notebook and pen to write about my days on water and I would pack a sketchbook too.
Before you leave remember to pack your suitcase from last week!
What would you pack for entertainment on board the boat and why?

Suitcase Packing

Our class today is reading a novel called Refugee. The book is about three children in different countries and in different times. They all have the same thing in common; they need to leave their country.

Today our teacher asked us a question; What would you pack in your suitcase if you had to leave the country?

Phone and Charger:
Our family would bring a phone in case we need help or to reach other family members. I would also include the charging cord to top up the battery. (I would pack a portable charger in case we are on the road for a long time.)

My Dogs and my Cat:
I would bring my dogs and my cat because they are important to me and my family. (Although it would be uncomfortable to bring three dogs and a cat when your fleeing the country!)

Clothes:
I would bring clothes because of hygienic reasons. I would definitely need some clean clothes and even a cosy jacket would be great when your becoming a refugee. You'll never know where you'll end up.

Notebook and a Pen:
Becoming a refugee might have you feeling lost. It would be good to write down whats happening right now. Also if you like drawing you could draw in the notebook too!

Food, Snacks and Water:
You still need food when your finding elsewhere to live. Packing some food like veggies, fruit and even pasta would be a smart idea. Also packing some snacks for the road too! And it is really important to drink water, especially when your tired out. Packing lots of water because you never know when you'll get thirsty. I would also pack dog and cat food since my animals are travelling with me too.

Passport/s:
I would pack a passport to be able to be on the plane to travel to the country I'm escaping to. I would also pack money to buy a ticket for the plane or more food in case I run out.

Blanket:
Finally, a blanket. You'd never know where your going to sleep over night. A blanket comes in handy, especially in cold places.

So what would you pack in your suitcase. Where would you go if you had to leave the country?

Are Numbers and Digits the same thing?

Last term, we were learning on both adding and subtracting large numbers and using place value to work out the equation. I think it's important to learn and know the difference between numbers and digits so we know to work out different math problems in the future by using that knowledge.
