The Maori Gods.

WALT: Write to describe how Nga Atua Maori relate to us.

On Wednesday, we learnt about the Maori Gods. We put the gods in colour/emotions and Miss Fleet asked us how we felt for different things. We stood behind what one suited us.

There are 6 emotions for the Maori Gods.

- Rongo-ma-tane is the bright/happy emotion.
- Maui is the cheeky/hoha emotion.
- Ruaumoko is annoyed and frustrate emotion.
- Tumatauenga is the angry and fuming emotion.
- Tawhirimatea is the lost and no control emotion.
- Tangaroa is the 'do over' and solution emotion.

She asked us questions like; "What do you think about art?" and "What do you think about reading?" Everyone stood by different emotions of the Maori Gods.

The Maori Gods relate to us because we all feel the way they can/could feel. For example, we have all stood by Tangaroa (Annoyed and Frustrated) at one point in our lives and we have all stood by Rongo-ma-tane (Happy and Peaceful). But we change our emotions all the time.

So what emotion are you at with reading or art? What's the god you can relate to right now?

  1. Tēnā koe Ella. I thoroughly enjoyed reading your post today. I agree, I feel that we have all experienced each of these emotions at some stage in our lives, and we feel differently about different things. For example, I'm usually sitting in Rongo-ma-tane when I'm surrounded by my family, at the beach, or reading a good book. However, I can often be sitting in Tumatauenga when I have a disagreement with someone, especially one of my siblings.

I really connect with Papatuanuku because she is our earth mother, and carer of all things. I feel at peace and grounded when I'm in nature, and thoroughly enjoy taking a walk through the ngahere or climbing a maunga.

For reading and art, I would be feeling Rongo-ma-tane. I thoroughly enjoy both reading and art, however, I'm quite picky about the books I read. I have to be really engaged in the book in order for me to finish it. What Atua are you with reading and art? Are there any situations or environments that would push you up towards Ruaumoko or Tumatauenga?

    1. Kia Ora Miss Fleet. Thank you for your comment. I am the same. I feel at peace with friends, family and swimming. But I can be Maui or Tumatauenga when I have a disagreement with my brother.

I am Rongo-ma-tane with both reading and art. I think when I'm hungry I get quite Tumatauenga.

      Thanks again for the comment!

  3. Hi Ella I like your blog post and all the spaces that you used it made it much easy to read I also liked that you used this - in your explanation and that you told the reader about the gods and how they feel. And to answer your last question I think I relate to Maui cause I'm cheeky .

  4. Hi Ella it is Ari. I really like your post, you explained it in such detail, and this a very good example of a quality blog post. I like your lists and examples because they are organised an explain it well. I think I relate to all the gods because I experiance all these emotions, but particularly Maui because often I am in between happy and frustrated.

  5. Hi Ella, I have really enjoyed reading your writing today. Today, I'm feeling a bit Maui, but I know that once I have something to eat, I'll be back at Rongo-na-tane.

Ella, why are you Rongo-ma-tane with both reading and art? Is it because you enjoy those subjects, or are you talented in both of these areas? Are you any other atua with different subjects?
